On the evening of 9 October, after returning from Turkmenistan, Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon, together with the Chairman of the National Assembly (Majlisi Milli) of the Majlisi Oli and Mayor of Dushanbe Rustam Emomali, laid the foundation stone of a new international terminal at Dushanbe airport, the President's press service reported.
According to the press service, the terminal will be built in line with modern international standards. Its capacity will be 8.5 million passengers a year. The construction period for the building is set at one and a half years, with high-quality materials and hundreds of experienced specialists. The stated aim is a high level of passenger service and handling in line with international standards while preserving Tajik hospitality traditions.
The President instructed airport management and other responsible officials to ensure high-quality work and put the terminal into operation on schedule.
Our assessment: if the project is delivered on the stated timeline, Dushanbe airport will gain headroom for growth in flights and passengers. For airlines, tour operators and suppliers of airport equipment and services, this is a signal to plan development with the new terminal in mind. This is flycentralasia's conclusion, not a statement by the authorities.
The statement does not name a contractor, cost or funding sources. Earlier, in February 2026, airport representatives described a new terminal of about 3 million passengers with a two-year timeline and a total airport capacity of 5 million. The 9 October statement gives 8.5 million and one and a half years, and it does not say whether these are the same project.
