Kostanay airport is set to more than double in size, expanding to over 11,000 square meters. The plan was announced by Kostanay region governor Kumar Aksakalov during the opening of the region's renovated railway station, where he noted that transport infrastructure development is proceeding on three fronts at once — road, rail and aviation.
According to Aksakalov, the airport covered 5,000 square meters four years ago; this year the region is beginning an expansion of a further 3,000 square meters, bringing the total to over 11,000 square meters. He attributed the need for reconstruction to rising passenger traffic, saying the existing infrastructure can no longer keep pace with current demand.
The airport's route network is also expanding. A regular Kostanay–Tashkent service is already operating — Centrum Air's first flight on the route took place on 13 June 2026 — and officials are now discussing increasing frequency to twice weekly. The regional deputy governor had earlier announced plans to add destinations in Vietnam, including Phu Quoc and Nha Trang.
Separately, talks are underway with Turkish carriers: according to Aksakalov, the airport's director is currently in Almaty negotiating with Turkish companies to launch a year-round scheduled Kostanay–Istanbul route.
Aksakalov also highlighted progress on road corridors, saying repairs on the route toward Orenburg via Denisovsky district are expected to be completed this autumn, which should increase transit traffic through Kostanay region.
