Uzbekistan Airways plans to open direct flights between Nukus (Uzbekistan) and Atyrau (Kazakhstan). Atyrau airport said on 19 October 2026 that the first departure is scheduled for 22 November 2026. According to the airport, the flight will be convenient, among others, for those travelling to visit relatives.
The airline confirmed that the flight is planned. Tickets will go on sale later.
For the region, this is more than one more line in the timetable. Nukus is the capital of Karakalpakstan, and its airport is the region's main air hub. Atyrau is one of Kazakhstan's main oil and gas centres. A direct flight will connect two regional centres without a stop in either capital and open a new gateway to Karakalpakstan for business travellers, tourists and families on both sides of the border.
The route has a clear precedent. When Uzbekistan Airways began flying from Nukus to Almaty in June 2024, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Transport said the route would greatly enhance trade, economic and business cooperation between the two countries. The same principle applies here: a direct flight cuts travel time and cost for entrepreneurs, contractors and specialists, which makes trade and joint projects easier.
What can attract passengers. For business trips, it is a short link between Atyrau and Nukus. For tourists, it is a convenient approach to the Aral Sea, the ship graveyard in Muynak, the Savitsky Museum and the ancient city of Mizdakhan. For families living on both sides of the border, it removes the need to connect elsewhere.
Our assessment: if the route reaches a stable frequency and affordable fares, it could become a new growth point for the regional economy. Airports will gain additional traffic, tour operators and hotels in Karakalpakstan a new flow of guests from Kazakhstan, and companies in Atyrau a convenient link to partners in Karakalpakstan. This is flycentralasia's conclusion, not a statement by Uzbekistan Airways or Atyrau airport.
